Imagery of an all-seeing eye can be traced back to Egyptian mythology and the Eye of Horus. The Wadjet (or Ujat, meaning “Whole One”) is a powerful symbol of protection in Kemet also known as the “Eye of Horus” and the “all seeing eye”. The symbol was frequently used in jewelry made of gold, silver, lapis, wood, porcelain, and carnelian, to ensure the safety and health of the bearer and provide wisdom and prosperity. The Eye of Horus, within the Egyptian cosmology, symbolized the eye of the person who has achieved enlightenment through various incarnations and has learned the mystery of God.

It also appears in Buddhism, where Buddha is also regularly referred to as the "Eye of the World" throughout Buddhist scriptures (e.g. Mahaparinibbana Sutta) and is represented as a trinity in the shape of a triangle known as the Tiratna, or Triple Gem. In Hinduism the gods have a third eye which is described as being "all powerful and all seeing eye." The Mexican ojo de venado charm, an ancient shamanic amulet made from a psychedelic legume seed is given an eye-related name: ojo de venado meaning Deer Eye.
